There
several parts involved with getting SNMP installed / configured on a local
server, weather it's MS Windows, or Novell, etc... SNMP can be
configured to send TRAP alerts to WhatsUp for just about any condition within
the operating systems control. Specialized hardware that is not
controlled directly by the OS, such as RAID controllers or redundant power
supplies etc..., will generally have a driver or application agent that includes
some management configuration tools. Some of these send email alerts
directly, some use SNMP TRAPs, others give the option to write events to the
servers log files, and many let you determine any or all methods if you
want.
Compaq
can use the Insight Management Agents to pass alerts via SNMP. HP uses
their server agents or toptools agents to do the same thing. Dell has
management agents too. Adaptec uses Storage Manager Pro to configure RAID
alert levels that can use SNMP or it writes to an NT log, either of which can be
monitored by WUG.
We use
SNMP TRAPs very heavily and on occasion you may have to devise creative work
arounds to get a particular event to be recognized by WhatsUp. Once this
is done, creating a matching event to trigger a notification is relatively
easy. I have put together a few different install scripts and the
documentation which we use on all of our monitored servers. Let me know if
you want any of these to try out or to use as some examples. I'll see if I
can put together something that's a bit more concise and not so
vague.

Hi
all,
I just started to
evaluate WUG today. Figured out the linked maps and got that
working.
Now my big question
is this. I want to receive SNMP traps from various devices (such as Compaq
servers). These traps will tell me when a power supply fails of if a drive in
an array fails etc (hardware stuff). I set another server to sent traps and I
know that it sent them but I cannot get WUG to display anything regarding the
SNMP trap. I got my server on the map and it is being polled via ICMP (is
green) and I went into properties and under events selected Any SNMP trap (I
even went in and found the Compaq Power Supply Failure trap). But when I pull
the power on one of the power supplies nothing is shown on the map. My
triangle in the top left corner is still there and still
white.
I complied the Compaq
MIBs into the system so I can see all the traps.
Any ideas on what I
am missing?
Also based on what I
am seeing I am going to have to go into each server and associate the traps I
want to be displayed / trapped for each server. Is that
correct?
Thanks
all.

It's
me, Pete, your friendly neighborhood WhatsUp product manager, and I'm
listening. You are all going to be very pleased with the 9.0 product due
in Q1/2004, details later. We'll be looking for beta testers later in
the year and Kelly Anderson, the Ipswitch WhatsUp Gold Diva will be looking
for volunteers. We also have some very cool new plug-ins that will need
testing by folks with some specific application monitoring requirements.
Send me private mail at [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a phone
number and we'll chat.
Oh, I'm still
waiting for the info I asked for re. voice modems a while ago. If you
get a minute please run that .exe I sent a while back and drop me a
line. Thanks a million!

Wouldn't it be great if all
software companies did function as a democracy of the users! The
features that we actually want and would use would be in the product .....

Does each

I guess we'll start over. I second that
request. It would be nice to make mass / multiple changes to mass
/ multiple devices at the same time.

Dependencies
I'm not sure what number we are up to
but... Here is my vote to allow dependencies from other
maps.
Here is an idea of a entire new way for WUG to
think about maps...
How about one master table of all devices,
similar to one huge map. Make this database in a format that can
easily be edited (like access or MySQL). Then start creating maps that
point to the devices. You can have a map with one, twenty or all
devices on it. You can have the same device on EVERY map if you
want. When you need to change a name or other attribute on a item,
you only have to change it once (in the Master Table).
Maps are really just views to a subset of
devices. This would reduce the number of times a device needs
pinged if it is on several maps.
Is this a workable solution???
