Sounds like the DHCP server on the D-Link is toast. Have you checked
the settings for DHCP on the router?

The router is Model # DI624 and I upgraded the firmware. The wireless is now
encrypted, but the wired desktop is still loosing the connection.
Interestingly, I have found that when the connection is lost, it is because
the router (or something) has changed the IP address of the computer from
its usual DHCP setting of 192.168.0.100 to 168.254.70.1 or 169.254.70.1. I
do not know why this is happening.
If we manually set the IP address back to 192.168.0.1 and the usual subnet
mask and default gateway, we still do not get the connection back. However,
from that point, if we run the "Set up a Network" wizard, we get the
connection back again. About 10 minutes later it reset to the 169.254.70.1
address.
Any ideas how to fix this?
Thanks,
