Andy's right.  192.168.0.1 is the default gateway address.

Leave the notebook alone and only change the desktop. The network does NOT have to be all static or all dhcp. It can very easily be a mixture. BTW the IP address for the desktop can not be 192.168.0.1 (hope that was a typo in one of your posts) because that is the IP address of the router (assuming the router is at the default). Make it 192.168.0.10 (if the laptop does not already have that IP address). Look at the various IP addresses the notebook is obtaining via dhcp and, except for the machine IP address, use the same for the desktop static IP setup.
