I format the C Drive and do clean installs from a Microsoft OEM CD. I would hate to have to buy a complete OEM kit for this operating system to do a reinstall on a Hewlett Packard that has its legal installation along with its COA etc. As a followup to the past discussions of the hardware points system that some claim is used by Microsoft to determine if you have to call them to reactivate a clean install, well things have changed. I never used the points system, nor did I get anywhere the results some of you reported who did who use the points system. Most of you claimed that the network card carried the most points. I claimed the CPU was considered to be the computer. I told you that the longest shot I have ever taken was building a new computer around a P4 from a Dell. Microsoft approved that for me. Since then things have gotten far worse. Now I have to call Microsoft to get clean installs of Windows XP Home OEM authenticated in well over 90% of installs on name brand computers where there have been no hardware changes! This is clear evidence that Microsoft does not appreciate anyone doing a clean install to replace a computer manufacturer's proprietary install using the Windows XP OEM Preinstallation Kit. With all the ever increasing resistance to proprietary hardware and proprietary installs of Windows XP, why do I keep resisting? With each new model it is more difficult to beat it into submission to the change from proprietary to generic in hardware or operating system changes. I continue to resist because the end result always and consistiently is: They perform much faster!
