I'm wondering if the few laptops offered on local Craigslist are
legit. There are some about a year old for nice price.

i'm sure there are some of both, but i would have to wonder why they
are selling a fairly new laptop. As you get closer to 2 yrs old, i
wouldn't be, mostly because that's when i start thinking about my next
one that i get when i get closer to 3 yrs.

Is there any way to tell if the laptop stolen - other than the seller
not looking like someone who had owned it to start with? Can only
think of lack of documentation or any CD's, as a sign.

I would walk away from a sale that did not include docs or a restore
CD. I don't know if most theives refomat or just sell as is, so
browsing the HD might give you a clue.

Not sure if there's a registry list of serial numbers, but even if
one existed, I would have to copy the info, go home and search.

AFAIK, the only thing available is the phone home option of some
security software. I don't know if entering the seriel at dell or hp's
sites would give you a clue or not...
