I have kept the non-students in mind pretty much as potential
theifs also. Trying to protect a laptop from theft is very difficult
but not impossible. Difficult in terms of securing data using many various
encryption method availiable but not impossible to physically secure it
in terms of not leaving it unattended, keeping it out of sight and close by
when not in use.

Its the choice of the individual to deploy what security methods work for them
and best security practices that are easy to use and to implement.

As for the students who forget what they learned at home then why should
the schools load students down with homework that doesn't improve their
skills or enhance their learning at all as a new study that I've read in a
local newspaper
can attest in its conclusion. The study concludes that most homework
assignments are a waste
of a students time becuase most teacthers don't know how to properly design or
create
the right homework assignmens geared towards research, supported facts,
critical thinking,
decision making, organizing thoughts and analysis. Its part of the reason as
the study also\
suggest why students do poorly in school esspecially on SATs.

Why concentrate ONLY on students??? Are you forgetting that
regular [well maybe not so regular :) ] people live around most
universities and colleges??? They know schools are easy
pickings. Most laptops stolen around our school are NOT by
students. And most of the people stealing them have absolutely
NO idea of what is on them... they just want the quick buck to
support whatever habit they have. And they don't go around
auctioning them off to the highest information bidder.

And nobody is saying any thing about NOT having any security...
they are talking about the fact of student behavior... as Wayne
and Diane have said, they go to school and promptly forget what
they learned at home. And to coin your phrase... it is a fact
of life and always will be...
