exactly what 'sniffer' program were you anticipating using on your thinkpad?
i assume by 'sniffer' you mean something like 'netstumbler', which finds
wireless access points, but does not do regular network traffic sniffing
(ie: snoop, tcpdump, and ethereal).

there are other options for you, such as 'wlanexpert'. try doing a search
for 'wireless stumbler or 'wireless sniffer' on www.google.com, different
programs support different cards, so what doesn't work with netstumbler may
work with another program.
