sorry, my first sentence was missing an important vocable: "Basically
this is a script more or less integrated *with* the standard Debian menu
generation procedure".

So, in fact, it does somehow use the menu package. But since the results
of the menu package are even less satisfying in my opinion, i have tried
applying this already available script workaround.

With the Debian menu package the main application menu is moved away
deep into the menu hierarchy instead of becoming readily available by
just being a single click away. Not very ergonomic IMHO.
