All - thanks for your help and comments.

J?rgen - the "1920x1280" is my typing error in the opening post. The actual 
preferred resolution is 1920x1080, and that's what I have in xorg.conf.  For a 
moment I thought you had spotted a mistake on my part and that my problem was 
solved. I'd be perfectly happy if it was my dumb mistake (I was almost hoping 
it would be!) 

I'm attaching one of the attempts at xorg.conf, and the matching log. I've been 
messing around with it a lot, and it's very possible I've done something to 
break it. Still - something that worked at 111b works less well at 117 and 118.

Ken - when I specify driver "radeon", I get an "Input out of range" on the 
monitor - nothing else. Perhaps I should do that one more time while logged in 
from elsewhere just to capture the Xorg.log.0 file.

Alan - I'll certainly be glad to provide doc to the team if they want to look 
into this.
