Often it helps, if you specify radeonhd, not radeon as driver in xorg.conf .
I see this as a bug that radeon is by default preferred over radeonhd.
There have been fights amongst the 2 drivers' maintainers on the x.org
devel list.
Fact is, that radeonhd works on more of the newer chipsets and better
(including higher resolutions).
