Thanks Martin. I gave that a try, and radeonhd without any other xorg.conf 
changes works without any visible difference from radeon. However, trying to 
add the higher resolutions that radeon did not support still did not work (fell 
back to 700x400). I'll stay on radeonhd to see if there's any differences I can 
observe otherwise.  

Interesting in that the driver reported the following:
(II) RADEONHD(0): Unknown card detected: 0x791E:0x105B:0x0E0A.
        If - and only if - your card does not work or does not work optimally
        please contact radeonhd at opensuse.org to help rectify this.
        Use the subject: 0x791E:0x105B:0x0E0A: <name of board>
        and *please* describe the problems you are seeing
        in your message.
(--) RADEONHD(0): Detected an RS690 on an unidentified card

Perhaps I should send that e-mail :-)
