Depends on the exact definition of backup, e.g. if I may take this from wikipedia: "In information technology, a backup or the process of backing up refers to making copies of data so that these additional copies may be used to restore the original after a data loss event." In this regard zfs send *could* be a tool for a backup provided you have the means of decrypting/deciphering the blob coming out of it. OTOH if I used zfs send to replicate data to another machine/location together with zfs receive and put a label "backup" onto the receiver this would also count as a backup from where you can restore everything and/or partially. In case of 'star' the blob coming out of it might also be useless if you don't have star (or other tools) around for deciphering it - very unlikely, but still possible ;) Of course your (plural!) definition of backup may vary, thus I would propose first to settle on this before exchanging blows...
