dget -x

Sorry for so much changelog spam, and I accidently forgot to set
urgency=medium on the last one.

Looking forward to your responses,

No upstream versioning

2014-04-24 Thread Benjamin Donald-Wilson
Hello,

I'm wishing to package ipad-charge[0] for Debian.[1] The only problem I
appear to be having is that the upstream don't version their uploads. I've
emailed the developer a few days ago but haven't received a response so far.
I'm wondering what I should version it as if I do not receive a reply from
the upstream developer?

Thanks,
Ben Donald-WIlson

Create an issue on github to tag his releases.

There was an issue reported about a year ago with regards about
versioning (https://github.com/mkorenkov/ipad_charge/issues/24) however
there was no replies.

If that doesn't work, another possibility would be to create a mock
version number based on the date, for example MMDD.{7-digit-commit-ID}.

So I will most likely go with this option and build the package tomorrow.

Thanks for the advice. Just one more quick question, should I use date of
the commit I'm using or the date that I package it? (last commit was
roughly 5 months ago)

 Consider using 0+gitMMDD.commitID

So if upstream start tagging their release will be simpler.

The website was fine last night so it must've happened within the last

[Bug 970854] Re: Image viewer crash while open JPG

2012-04-02 Thread Ben Donald-Wilson
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You
might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/970854/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

mouse only moves horizontally in x

2012-03-31 Thread Donald Wilson
Hi there!

I've a Sun Ultra1 I'm trying to use, and everything works just fine, except My
mouse will only move horizontally in X. I can't move it vertically. I've double
checked with both my pads, and the same thing happens. Does anyone have a
suggestion to fix this? I've started xdm via rc.conf according to the
unaccelerated display instructions in the README.

[Bug 945109] Re: install failed at choose partitions to format

2012-03-02 Thread Ben Donald-Wilson
Hi,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read How to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

Melbourne Release Party Ideas

2012-01-24 Thread Benjamin Donald-Wilson
Hello all,

Just wondering does anyone have any ideas for a Melbourne Release
Party, as with the Brisbane InstallFest it would have to be close to
good parking (Have luck ;)) and public transport. I have thought about
the State Library cafe there however I am not sure about the prices as
I am yet to ring them. Also most importantly who would be interested
in attending one in Melbourne?

 Hi everyone,

The Ubuntu Global Jam [1] is an incredible opportunity for the Ubuntu
community to unite together around the weekend of 2 - 4 March 2012 to work

everyone is welcome and encouraged to get involved. Curious about how to
make a real difference to Ubuntu? This is a great chance to make that
 difference.

The Ubuntu Australia Loco Team is organising several events [2] as part of
this Global Jam. We are still looking for more people to take on running a
Jam, so if you think this sounds like something you could do, please sign up
on the Australian Team JamsForPrecise list. Also, we invite everyone to
participate in one or many Jams over the weekend of 2-4 March. You do not
need to have in depth (or in most cases, any!) technical knowledge at all -
there will be an instructor for each Jam who can assist you if needed. The
Ubuntu Jams are a great way to get involved in the community surrounding the
Ubuntu operating system, so please join in.

[opensuse-marketing] User Days/Open Week

2011-09-23 Thread Benjamin Donald-Wilson
Hello everybody,
Seeing as Ubuntu User Days and Open Week are coming up I have a idea
for the openSUSE community to do something too. The idea of User Days
and Open Week are that  people run IRC based session about it like
using Firefox, switching from another OS, and others. User Days should
run over 1 weekend and try to have a session every hour like
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UserDaysTeam/natty starting with a intro about
User Days. Open Week would happen a week or two before a new release
and should focus on the previous release as it turns it into the new
*stable* release.

Thinking this would require a team of at least 3 or 4 people with
monthly meetings and I am more then happy to lead the team if the
community does not object.

So I send this email for approval for this and your opinion.

Re: Converting tapes and records to cd

2011-08-18 Thread Benjamin Donald-Wilson
Hi Peter,

I asked NRWilonon IRC chat and this is the messages that happened;

(7:34:28 PM) benonsoftware: Yep
(7:34:48 PM) NRWlion: ok, you need three different kinds of software
(7:34:58 PM) NRWlion: 1. a software called audiagrabber
(7:35:01 PM) benonsoftware: Ok then (Its not for me)
(7:35:09 PM) NRWlion: audiograbber
(7:35:20 PM) NRWlion: with an encoder called lame
(7:35:33 PM) NRWlion: current version should be 3.98 something
(7:35:36 PM) benonsoftware: Yep I use lame daily :)
(7:36:08 PM) NRWlion: with this audiograbber and lame encoder you are
able to grab the audio information from the CD tracks
(7:36:14 PM) benonsoftware: Ok
(7:37:35 PM) NRWlion: after you grab the cd-information you can
convert them to .wav
(7:37:49 PM) benonsoftware: Got it :)
(7:38:03 PM) NRWlion: afterwards you need audacity
(7:38:09 PM) benonsoftware: Yep
(7:38:22 PM) NRWlion: this makes you able to convert and edit the wav
into an mp3
(7:38:28 PM) benonsoftware: Yep
(7:39:45 PM) NRWlion: a bitrate from 192 to 256 is most likely the best
(7:39:55 PM) benonsoftware: Got it
(7:40:16 PM) NRWlion: ;) trust me :D worked seven years in a radio station
(7:40:42 PM) benonsoftware: :)
(7:40:45 PM) NRWlion: and the only thing you need is a pc with a cd-rom player
(7:41:12 PM) benonsoftware: He should have it :)

If you have any questions just email me back and I'll try to fix it.

The question for you is what time would you like me to run it at in

4th of September at 2PM and the session should last around 1-2 hours
depending. Just reply to this email for what time you can come.

 Hi people
12.1 will be out on November and November is closer that you can
imagine when it comes to the amount of work that should be done by

We made great amount of work there and with great quality.

 We had 3 collaboration days:
 1 for ambassadors(Ambassador Support Review)
 1 for Marketing(Marketing Materials Review)
1 for PR and Social Media (PR and Social Media Review)

So in order for this to be a reality we need people to organize this.
  - Firstly we need people to volunteer themselves for be online on IRC
for at least 12 hours as moderators for those days. In order for
everybody around the Globe to attend we make the Collaboration days a
24 hour Event. I am of course in for the first 12 hour stand  for
 ambassadors day.
  - We need people to organize and create the wiki pages that we will
 need about the collaboration days
  - We need all of you to participate on those days because as previous
Collaboration days proved, anybody can help no matter how experienced.

Last but not least, it is important to do that before the Marketing
Hackfest that is planned for 15th and 16th of September, so that we
could use the Collaboration days achievements there and plan a better
 marketing campaign.

Re: [Tutor] Assigning range

2011-07-27 Thread Donald Wilson
You could start with an anonymous function using the lambda operator, such as:

mid_range = lambda x: x[len(x) // 2]

Note: If you use len(x) / 2 in python 3.x you will get a TypeError because the
division operator / returns a float. Floor // returns an int in 2.x and 3.x.

Then use either:

x = range(1000, 4001)
mid_x = mid_range(x) # mid_x == 2500

or…

mid_x = mid_range(range(500, 751)) # mid_x == 625

etc. to retrieve the middle element.

You can extract the mid point of any sequence type, such as a string, using
this function.

mid_x = mid_range(‘12345678987654321’) # mid_x == ‘9’

middle_number = lambda lo, hi: abs(lo - hi) // 2

will work if you just need the mid point of two numbers; either ints or floats.

mid_x = middle_number(0, 1000) # mid_x = 500

I looked into why ubuntu-manual.org wasn't appearing in the Google

These links were only present in the HTML pages served to web crawlers

Google detected this and removed out site from their search results.

I've removed the hacked files and will continue to investigate the
methods used to hack the site.  In the meantime, I've requested that
Google reinstate our site in their search results.  It may take some

We should look into updating our site to use a more standard framework

Re: Ubuntu-AU Social Media

2011-06-12 Thread Benjamin Donald-Wilson
Hi all,

I was wondering if you need anyone helping admin the Twitter account I'll
put my hand up for that.

 Good evening all,

As discussed tonight at the meeting we're moving ahead with the social
media for Ubuntu-AU. It has been requested so that it is easier to keep up
to date with the team happenings than email alone. The results of mailing
list and the meeting discussion are as follows:

Facebook - stick to the group setting and we have Joel Addison volunteering
to work out how to input an Ical feed into the group page as events. And as
such I have added Joel to administer the facebook account to facilitate this
for us as automating it is vital to maintaining the same information across
 multiple sources with minimal input.

Twitter - we have set up an account https://twitter.com/#!/UbuntuAU

Identica - I realise we already have a group for this but from discussions
we've decided it would be better to set up an individual account as this
will allow posting from the account to all followers which apparently isn't
possible from a group. It will also tie in nicely with the twitter account
and as such is available at http://identi.ca/ubuntuau I have had this
account join the group that already existed to see if this reduces confusion
and it has integrated to the twitter api.

The idea of these groups is not to continually spam members but to provide
relevant loco information. For example reminders about upcoming events,
meetings and anything specifically loco related. If you have information
that you think should be sent out over these channels please feel free to
contact me via email or on IRC.

As always if anyone has any suggestions for improvement please let us know.

Hi all,

I was wondering about the Australian LoCo Re-Approval Application has it
been granted? I think we have compiled with the request's so could we ask
for status again to become one more a official LoCo team?

Yes from what I know from it should work.

What format are you using for your drive?

Hi folks and thanks for the responses to my earlier questions about

Now that I assume updates will soon no longer be given for 8.04, I am

 external HDD.

Does 10.04 work automatically (high speed) with USB 3.0?

 Thanks in advance,

Re: 10.04 and USB 3.0

2011-04-25 Thread Benjamin Donald-Wilson
Hi Dave,

I would use the exFAT format because by the sounds of it your using it
on Win 7 and Ubuntu 10.04. The exFAT format supports Win 7 and with
the ppa:relan/exfat ppa in Ubuntu you can read write to a exFAT
format. Just to let you know you need to format the drive in Win 7 for
exFAT as the ppa does not support formating yet.

Re: Shall we hide the GUI for Hibernate in Natty?

2011-03-11 Thread Benjamin Donald-Wilson
I like the idea but instead of tweaking the
/var/lib/polkit-1/localauthority/10-vendor.d/com.ubuntu.desktop.pkla
line then maybe add a GUI to show what buttons the user wants to show
in the shutdown chocies.

Thanks, Benny Age 12.

On 01/02/2011, Rick Spencer rick.spen...@canonical.com wrote:
 Hello all,

This email is to get some feedback and discussion about an idea under
 consideration for Ubuntu in Natty.

Natty is currently NOT showing the Hibernate option in the list of
shutdown choices. This is currently an experiment, but I thought it
might be worth discussing the pros and cons on these lists as well.

The reasoning for hiding Hibernate includes:
 1. It doesn't work well for many users on many machines.
 2. It's very slow.
 3. It's not as useful because users can just suspend.
 4. The difference between hibernate and suspend is confusing.
 5. There is a lot of work involved with verifying that Hibernates works
and fixing bugs to ensure that it works. This work is not always
completed, and the work that does get done can be channeled to other
useful areas. (In other words, fewer bugs through fewer features to
 support).

However, Hibernate works well for some users, so this will be a painful
 regression[1].

 Please note that currently:
 1. No decision has been taken, it's just an experiment and is very open
 to discussion at this point.
 2. The feature is hidden in the UI, but can be turned back on by
 tweaking,
 /var/lib/polkit-1/localauthority/10-vendor.d/com.ubuntu.desktop.pkla
 3. The desktop team decided that session saving (in Gnome) is
unsalvagable, so removing hibernate would mean that there is no way to
 save state across powerdowns/powerups.[2]

So, thoughts, discussion, feedback, options, suggestions, rants, raves,
 etc... ?

 Cheers, Rick
