[Chihuahuas] Re: Update on 100 chis MO/PM closing

2011-11-16 Thread Tee
Hi Gloria!
Yes, I was supposed to get Cesar. He was supposed to get on a transport but
mill owners left him behind the day he was to be transported. Every weekend I
have been ready to drive down there to get him as I am coming from Springfield,
Il and he is in Missouri. Then the news came about the puppy dying in
transport. I cried off and on all day as I had been looking forward to having
him join our little pack. I wish I knew what to do in this situation. I don't
want to bring harm to those at home and occasionally I bring homeless dogs in
to vet them and find them homes. I also plan on having another dachshund puppy
live with us someday.down the roadmaybe in a couple years. I fell in
love with Cesar on sight. I am good with mill dogs and knew I could help him
recover. I have one mill dachshund with us now and he will be with us until his
time comes to pass. He is a wonderful little guy and has made huge progress,
although it has been a very slow transformation.

I can't help thinking of little Cesar stuck in the puppy mill. He should have
been home a month ago :( Had he met transport he would have already been here
and he would have been out of harms way. And I wouldn't have known about the
parvo. Knowing this now, I feel (based on vets opinion) I would be
irresponsible exposing my (now) 4 at home. Not to mention the fact parvo can
stay in the earth for many years after it has been contaminated. What would you
do?

 Hi Tee!

First, I want to say thank you sooo much for even considering to adopt one of
these babies. The final decision is really up to you. I will tell you of my
 experience
with two maltese mill puppies that I rescued many years ago. It was when
parvo first came out, and the vaccine that they had for it was new on the
market and they really didn't have much time to test the vaccine, since the
outbreak was so widespread and hundreds of pups and dogs were dying across
 the states.

At that time I wasn't aware of what a PM is really like and had started my
first pet shop job. It was also the first time that this pet shop had ordered
puppies. We received 12 different breeds. Within the first couple of days the
pups started to look very sick and one by one would die overnight when the
store had closed. The owners were waiting for a reply from the so called
breeder as to what to do with the sick puppies. Parvo can be extremely quick
in killing a pup, before you really see all the symptoms, while others can
languish on for a couple of weeks. The store owners refused to take them to a
vet unless they were guaranteed that the breeder would reimburse them and the
breeder (PM) wouldn't reimburse the store for the dead puppies unless the
store shipped them back at their own expense. So while they were arguing back
and forth within the first two weeks out of the 12 dogs, 2 got sold and I had
no idea what their out come was ,and 8 pups died and two were left, a bischon
and a maltese. The maltese didn't act sick and would follow me around the
store an even sleep under the front counter. So I was falling in love with
him, and wanted to get him out of there. Another week went by and he started
to show symptoms of being sick as did the bichon.

I asked to buy him and after 3 days of waiting for them to make a decision,
they finally said I could buy him. I had wanted to take him to a vet as soon
as he started looking sick but the owners wouldn't hear of it. So once I paid
for him, I took him directly to the Vet. They did give me a record of his
shots and it seems that the PMs were so paranoid of Parvo that they were
giving the dogs and pups Parvo shots every week, plus combining the live and
killed virus vaccines. They were in fact actually giving these dogs Parvo
with all of these injections!! That is what the Vet had told me and why they
were dying. They didn't know too much at that time as to how to control
Parvo and the shots were an experiment. No one knew, not even the Vets as to
how much vaccine and how often a pup would need it, until all data had been
accumulated and they could study it better.

I named my puppy Fluffy, and the day that I took him home was also the last
day that I worked for those people. He was very, very sick and just wasting
away, just like the other pups did. The Vet said that there was no way that
he would make it. To this day, I firmly believe that it was my constant

Hi All,
I have been buying my pee pads at the 99 cents only store. They have the packs
of small ones which have 10 or the large ones that have 5 for, well, 99 cents!
LOL I put newspaper under them because they are not leak proof! Then I just
toss it on the trash. I have 2 chi's and they go on them just fine.
Hope this helps!

I pretty much answered that question. I’ve brought two more dogs into my home.
Owners of both were told about the Parvo and said the dogs were up to date on
vaccinations. My vet saved Becky when she had Parvo. Knowledgeable vets.
Should know that vaccinations are about 90% or maybe more effective. Also my
vet told me they have a 90% save rate if a dog has Parvo.

[Chihuahuas] Disciplining a baby

2011-11-16 Thread Lynda

Hello everyone...as you know Miss Charlotte came home to live at the
Crittershack on Wednesday night.  She's doing great - It's been days now
without an accident off the pee pads...sleeping good (and for 6 hours) in her
crate (and she only cries a minute or two initially) - and her crate is 9 times
out of 10 clean and dry the next morning. I LOVE the way she smells...I can't
wait to get home and sniff that little puppy head.

So...I have 2 other dogs - Liza doesn't know she's a dog and doesn't
bother with other dogs.  She's INCREDIBLY tolerant of Timmy my schnoodle and
the cats (who love to lay over her for warmth).  Timmy is High Energy ...he's
go go go until he falls asleep but gets along with Liza and the cats perfectly
...but Charlotte has taken to being what appears to be 'mean' to him - growling
and lunging with her little 2 pound bark.  I give a 'no' command and pull her
back away - poor Timmy looks at me and wonders 'what did I do to deserve
that'? Sometimes she's relentless in pursuing him this way. He's only growled
at her twice but he's never been challenged so I'm not sure how far he will
allow her to push until he strikes back..I don't want her to get hurt - he's
only 14# but that's big enough. Liza and Timmy are free roaming and need little
disciplining anymore. I'm very proud of them.   A few people at the vet's
office have suggested correcting Charlotte with a little squirt of water from a
spritzer type bottle ...

I've never had to correct a dog or cat in this way - so I'm reaching out to all
of your for help.  I have no real place for 'time out' - I gate her in the
kitchen when I walk the other 2 outside - so I don't want to use that as a
'punishment' place and of course I'd never use her crate.

HELP...

RE: [Chihuahuas] Eye tears?

2011-11-16 Thread Joan Croft
Both Dolly Desi have been having that lately. I asked the vet when I took
Dolly for her last vaccine. He said to give her a quarter of a 25 mg
Benadryl every 8 hours. It is staining her fur a little. Desi has the
streams of fluid, but it really doesn't leave a stain on him because he is
already so dark.but I see it dried on him right below the eye.

You may want to try some of the Angel Eyes that is pretty much for white
dogs that get the pink stain - but that is supposedly from a yeast or
something.

Let me know if you hear of anything that will help.

I have used the squirt bottle with Dolly Desi. I did it about three times
and after that if they saw the spray bottle in my hand they would stop doing
whatever they were doing wrong. It is harmless, and it does work.

It sounds like Charlotte is vying with Timmy to be the Alpha Dog in the house.
Little girls are very bossy!

OK - so the spray bottle I will tryIf I had to guess on who's the alpha now
- I wouldn't know what to say...it's so low key and normal in my house...maybe
my 15 pound cat..?  LOL... Charlotte has tried to approach her - but Faelyn
gives her a nice decent meow and Char just sits down and stares at her like
'h how can I manage this one'?

Just the thought of a 2 pounder being alpha makes me chuckle - altho I know
it's not funny and needs to be corrected NOW...

I started to use a spray bottle on a kitten I rescued a long time ago - and HE
LIKED IT...he was a wonderful kitty - lived 17 years and was my 'soul' kitty -
but he LOVED water...used to sit in the window when it was raining - and if I
hadn't shut the window yet - would just sit there and get soaked...loved the
shower too. The spray bottle was his buddy...so I started to use an small can
of just 'air' - whoa...he didn't like that...and learned quickly.

SILLY ANIMALS...

THANK YOU JOAN...

2011-11-16 Thread Peggy The Girls
You didn't mention whether or not Cesar already had his shots for parvo, or
whether he also became sick. If he is still okay by now then I doubt that he
has parvo and can only assume that he was previously inoculated before the
other puppy died. That would make him safe to adopt, as well as any others
that have not gotten sick by now. Also you mentioned that it was a puppy
that died and not an adult dog. The puppy probably was to young to have
been given all the shots in time to save it.

Have you inquired recently how Cesar is doing? The fact that you were able
to drive down there to get him, means that you were also pre-approved to
adopt him by the rescue? I missed seeing his picture, and if you saved it,
could you please post it? If I remember the dates right, either today or
tomorrow is the last day for any of them.

I honestly feel that you don't have anything to worry about since your dogs
are already immune to the virus. I would also call another Vet for an
opinion. Neither of my malteses gave the virus back and forth to each other
nor did they infect any other dog during their entire lives. If you do take
Cesar, maybe wearing and old shirt that you can discard and disposable
plastic gloves, and carry him straight into the bathtub for a good bath
which I am sure he will need anyway, may help to alleviate any fears of him
having the virus on his fur. Assuming that he is okay to begin with, you won
t have to worry about him shedding it in his poop. Discard any collar or
leash that he came with before bringing him inside and all should well.

In the meantime, here is an article and a link on how the virus works.

A viewer asks this question about Parvo in dogs
I recently traveled with my two dogs that are vaccinated. I stayed with a
friend who had a ten-month old dog that was not vaccinated. After we were
there for two days, her dog got sick and died from Parvo. Could my dogs
carry the virus from stopovers at roadside rest areas and given it to her
dog? This was a very sad situation and I need to know if it was because of
my visit.

Answer: Parvovirus Incubation and Transmission
This is a sad situation and there is no definite way to prove how the
unvaccinated dog became ill with parvo, but since he became ill so quickly
after the visiting dogs arrival, it is unlikely that they were the source.
On average, the incubation period for canine parvovirus (CPV) is 3-7 days.
If the non-vaccinated dog became sick and died within 2 days of the visitor
s arrival, it would be unlikely that the visiting dogs brought in the virus.

Parvovirus is a hardy virus and is considered to be ubiquitous, meaning that
it is potentially everywhere. An unvaccinated dog is at high risk for parvo
and other diseases from many possible sources. Vaccination for this disease
is the best prevention.
Adult vaccinated dogs are well-protected against parvo. Their immune systems
mount a response against any parvovirus they may come in contact with,
preventing clinical illness.
Parvovirus in the Environment
Dogs infected with parvovirus shed millions of viral particles with each
diarrhea bowel movement and may shed virus for 2-3 weeks post-exposure.
Canine parvovirus survives in the environment and on surfaces. Disinfecting
the environment of parvo is difficult, and this virus may last a few weeks,
months, or even up to 2 years, if the conditions are favorable. Sunlight and
low humidity (arid) conditions will inactivate the virus quicker than cool,
moist, shady conditions. Water, via rain showers or a hose, will dilute the
amount of infective viral particles, but not inactivate the virus.
In addition to virus-laden fecal matter and environmental contamination,
parvovirus can be transmitted via surfaces - hands, tools, bowls, shoes,
other pets, clothing, etc. A dilute bleach solution (1 part bleach to 30
parts water) should be used on cleanable surfaces, good sanitation and
hand-washing for non-bleachable surfaces. (Never use bleach on pets!)
It is impossible to know for sure, but it is likely that the unvaccinated
dog was exposed/incubating the virus prior to the traveling dogs arrival.
The fact that the visiting dogs are adults and vaccinated helped protect
them from contracting the parvovirus during their stay.

Both Dolly Desi have been having that lately. I asked the vet when I took Dolly for her last vaccine. He said to give her a quarter of a 25 mg Benadryl every 8 hours. It is staining her fur a little. Desi has the streams of fluid, but it really doesn’t leave a stain on him because he is already so dark…but I see it dried on him right below the eye.You may want to try some of the Angel Eyes that is pretty much for white dogs that get the pink stain – but that is supposedly from a yeast or something. Cindy, have you had her to a Vet yet? The Vet will be able to determine
whether the pups are too big for her to deliver on her own. If so, then a C
is recommended. Only the Vet examine can tell you for sure. He may even have
to take an exray and see of all the pups are positioned right and will be
able to count how many. Is this your breeder, or a rescue?

I agree.  Everytime you bring another animal into your household, whether from
a pet shop, owner, or rescue, or even meet one, you are exposing your animals
to unknown issues.  Nothing is completely safe.  If your animals are
vaccinated, you have done the best you can. This dog deserves a forever home.

He is a wonderful little guy and has made huge progress,
although it has been a very slow
 transformation.

So while they were arguing back
and forth within the first two weeks out of the 12 dogs, 2 got sold and I had
no idea what their out come was ,and 8 pups died
and two were left, a bischon and a maltese. The maltese didn't act sick and
would follow me around the store an even sleep under the front counter. So I
was falling in love with him, and wanted to get him out of there. Another week
went by and he started to show symptoms of being sick as did the bichon.

I asked to buy him and after 3 days of waiting for them to make a decision,
they finally said I could buy him. I had wanted to take him to a vet as soon
as he started looking sick but the owners wouldn't hear of it. So once I paid
for him, I took him directly to the Vet. They did give me a record of his
shots and it seems that the PMs were

LIKED IT...he was a wonderful kitty - lived 17 years and was my 'soul' kitty -

One of our boys has watering eyes all the time. The vet said it is because he
has big protruding eyes that probably dry out easily. Fortunately he is black

occasionally. I have found that giving him only distilled water while we are

I know. I have a very good desktop computer in the front bedroom, but I cannot
hear Dolly Desi barking to come in or otherwise. The keyboard is different,
and it just doesn’t feel right. I wasn’t able to get Outlook up and running on
that. I thought it was because I had so many emails since I last used it, but
everything came up on this computer which would include everything that is on
the Hotmail website.

The good news is that my laptop’s extended service contract is up on the 22nd.

RE: [Chihuahuas] Disciplining a baby

2011-11-16 Thread Joan Croft
Well, if everything is so calm in your house before Charlotte, maybe she was
the alpha where she was from. My vet said there always has to be an alpha…not
sure if that is an alpha of dog and a alpha of cat, or an alpha of both.

I think cats like water much more than dogs. I have seen many pictures of cats
on the sink counter drinking out of the faucet.

Take it as it happens and if you see that Charlotte is just being aggressive to
the cat, then I would do the squirt bottle on Charlotte.

Enjoy your new baby and the rest of your four-legged family.

So...I have 2 other dogs - Liza doesn't know she's a dog and doesn't bother
with other dogs. She's INCREDIBLY tolerant of Timmy my schnoodle and the cats
(who love to lay over her for warmth). Timmy is High Energy...he's go go go
until he falls asleep but gets along with Liza and the cats perfectly ...but
Charlotte has taken to being what appears to be 'mean' to him - growling and
lunging with her little 2 pound bark. I give a 'no' command and pull her back
away - poor Timmy looks at me and wonders 'what did I do to deserve that'?
Sometimes she's relentless in pursuing him this way. He's only growled at her

Yes. I just noticed that Dolly’s eyes are having a stain. At first I thought
it was just wet, but it is actually turning dark. This year has been hard on
both of them with watering eyes. I was concerned so when I took her for her
vaccine, the vet said it is just allergies and give them Benadryl until the
allergens calm down.. There is still a lot of wind and it blows so hard and so
fast that I can’t just try to figure out what my neighbors have, it is probably
from the entire valley!

Both Dolly Desi have been having that lately. I asked the vet when I took
Dolly for her last vaccine. He said to give her a quarter of a 25 mg Benadryl
every 8 hours. It is staining her fur a little. Desi has the streams of
fluid, but it really doesn’t leave a stain on him because he is already so
dark…but I see it dried on him right below the eye.

You may want to try some of the Angel Eyes that is pretty much for white dogs

Dolly Desi get only distilled water. I really don’t want to use the Angel
Eyes other…and from what I remember from reading about it a couple years
ago, the tears of breeds such as Maltese, Shih Tzu, etc. have some sort of
bacteria or yeast in their tears and that is why the tears stain that
reddish color. This is the first year that I have seen Dolly’s eyes
water…and it is just a little bit, but I will try to get some of the Tear
Stain by Only Natural. It is currently on backorder. How do you administer
it to your pup? My dogs don’t get canned food, only kibble. I have been
adding canned pure pumpkin to Dolly’s daily ‘treat’ by mixing with Pedialyte
and a little canned food…she eats all that very fast and the bowl is very
clean. ¼ of a teaspoon is too much to put in a pill pocket.

Let me know how you use it.

One thing to watch for once the bandages come off.

I learned this from experience: Desi sat and guarded Dolly all day long.
If I took off her e-collar I would watch and she didn't go to lick or
anything and then if she did, or if I had to go out of the room, I would put
it back on. Well.one day I noticed that her incision was pinkish like it
was splitting open. I took her to the vet who told me that I have to keep
her collar on. I told her that I did and if she didn't have it on she was
right by me and being watched. Then it came to me.Desi was doing his puppy
duty and trying to heal her during the night.he removed a couple of stitches
while I was sleeping! If they sleep in separate kennels, that is good, but
if both have access to each other at night, you may want to put some of that
gauzy looking tape around his knee at night.or something!

of weeks that he has to be contained and kept quiet).

Thanks for the continuing prayers and healing energy!!

Thanks Joan-that is the one I was looking at but I believe a little smaller,
same brand color. What sort of bottom does it have?

Anyone have any recommendations for a 'car seat' for a chi? I'd like one that
sits 'up' so she can see out..

 Thanks, (again)

George is home and doing ok. He is restless and whimpering when he tries to
move. I have been carrying him outside to go potty and he stood on his own for
a few minutes today, yay George!! He is a little grumpy with his sister.

It has a sturdy bottom. I always put a blanket or fleece throw in the bottom.
There is a sturdy piece that goes from the booster seat to the car's seat. As I
remember there are some metal pieces that provide the bottom support. I don't
know if the smaller one has two leads.
