Re: [GNC] Import matching

2024-04-23 Thread Phyllis Bruce
Gyle, this import problem was the subject of my email a little while ago.
In my case, not so much the need for a split transaction as a method to
identify the specific transfer account needed and then the ability to add
it to the import information. My work around is to import the data file,
hit finish, and deal with the imbalances. Not at all elegant but I only
have to look up the information one time. Then I reconcile with my
statement.

Liz suggested setting up a scheduled transaction with the proper number of
splits and filling them in when the bill was received. She does that for
her utility bills.

I have a few regular transactions that have the same amount but GNU has not
learned which is which ( which $10 belongs to which subscription,
for example.) I thought the amount and usual date of the transaction could
be enough. If it is a specific amount GNU wants to associate it with the
first time that amount was imported (I think)

I use QFX on a Windows 11 pc and GNUcash Version 4.13, I was seeing so much
chatter about the newer versions that I've held off updating.

Regards,
Phyllis B

Re: [GNC] Please address broken QIF import

2024-04-23 Thread David Carlson
Sir,

In my experience most financial institutions that offer QIF exports also
offer OFX format which will often go under a similar name.

I use the OFX downloads for several bank and credit card accounts.

If you need the QIF format then you will probably be stuck either waiting
for the 5.7 windows release or reverting either to an earlier 5 series or
maybe even 4 series if you have an older Linux based machine as I do.

[GNC] Please address broken QIF import

2024-04-23 Thread Yann Salmon via gnucash-user

Hello,

in Gnucash 5.6, importing banking transactions from a QIF file no longer
works.

Browsing this mailing list, I discovered this has been corrected but is
only available by compiling the latest source or using a "nightly
build", both of which are too convoluted for Otto Normaluser (I have
been dabbing at flatpak and I think I might have managed to install some
build from a recent commit, but running it seems also not straightforward).

Downgrading to 5.5 is convoluted too -- only advanced GUI/CLI allow this.

This also means that the GnuCash version available from the front page
"does not work" — not being able to import your bank statements is kind
of breaking.

Since there is, if I understand correctly, a fix to this major bug, I
really think a 5.6.1 release would be helpful.

Re: [GNC] Any bank that still functions well with AqBanking? Does Paypal?

2024-04-23 Thread Kalpesh Patel
Bryan - GNC does not have extensive of online download capabilities as Quicken
does; rightfully so -- that is what Quicken provides in return for purchasing a
license for, and that is what Quicken already offers and does well. Most of us,
if not all, who came over from Quicken world that wanted to unshackle from
their yearly subscription model tend to rely on downloading the data directly
from financial institution using OFX/QFX (preferred), QIF or CSV format and
then import it in. There may be here and there that may be using off-line
programs (like I using modified PocketSense scripts from
http://sites.google.com/site/pocketsense/) to download them in OFX format that
is importable. Nonetheless GNC model is mostly tied to export from financial
institution and import it in into GNC; how you export it out is all up to your
creativity ...

I'm trying to switch from Quicken to GnuCash.

The AqBanking feature did not work with my two banks.

The primary thing I still love about Quicken is that I can simply click a
button and it downloads transactions across all my accounts. It's a huge time
saver.

To switch to GnuCash, I would have to at the very least consolidate all my
frequently used accounts into one bank that either downloads automatically
through the AqBanking feature, or perhaps through some API script that I would
have to create and manage (ugh), or, as a last option, log in to every day and
download the transaction reports.

Does anyone know of any method, bank, or whatever that allows for automating
the transaction download feature that speeds up the process?

Alan,
I beg to differ. Amazon did split my order into 2 separate orders, each with
its own invoice. However, that wasn't my issue. My issue was GNC not matching
the separate transactions on import. I resolved it by manually matching the
transactions when reconciling and not importing those 2 transactions.

Amazon doesn't split it into multiple invoices, but multiple payments per
invoice. When you go into Amazon and go to Your Orders, click the *show
invoice* link. At the bottom it will show you the payment break down (taxes,
gift card, each CC payment made etc)

GNC will process this just fine. Just apply each CC payment to the appropriate

There is only one price entry for 7/5/2023 in the price database.

Re: [GNC] Import matching

David,
1st thanks for the reply.

When you ask for more information, I assume you are asking for OS and version?
If so, Windows11 and at the time probably GNUCash 5.5, but currently 5.6.

I seem to have the issue with CSV import, more than ODX/QFX imports. The
original post, to which you replied, was on 3/11. When I did the next CSV
import on 4/11 it worked better. Good thing most of my imports are OFX/QFX as
it seems to work a lot better. However, I would think the matching process
would work the same, even using the same coding, regardless of the import type.

As for the Amazon splitting one order into 2 invoices, I understand that
GNUCash couldn't match that and I didn't expect it to. That is why I split my
GNUCash entry into 2 entries, each matching one of the import values. GNUCash
still wouldn't match the 2 import values to the 2 GNUCash transactions.

Overall, the matching process works well for OFX/QFX most of the time with only
occasional hiccups. CVS imports are more problematic, but still save time. I
also agree, that some institutions matching are worse than others.

Thaks again for your time.

Please provide more information. Not only have the import functions changed
over recent releases, but there is more than one type.

Even without that information, I am sure that GnuCash cannot figure out how
Amazon split one transaction into two. You would have to manually check those
and not expect a match. My experience with matching in the OFX type has never

Re: [GNC] Import matching

For Amazon, your best bet is to use the vendor functions.
,
You can create the total invoice in GNC and then apply the payments to the
invoice (which, on  orders with many items may be 3-4 payments).

Alternatively, you have to do janky things with placeholder transactions.

RE: Inventory and GnuCash

Hi Richard,

GnuCash is adequate for very basic inventory, by tracking the total value of
each item, or lot.
It works well for my small business where I track only a few items of moderate
to high dollar value.
I post the change of $ value for the items added or used, and manually note
quantities involved.
For my free stock (high volume low cost: screws, nuts, resistors etc.) I use
the old manual counting method;
A little messy, but it works well for me.

All the best,
Eric Hammond

Re: [GNC] Import matching

2024-04-23 Thread David Carlson
Gyle,

Please provide more information. Not only have the import functions
changed over recent releases, but there is more than one type.

Even without that information, I am sure that GnuCash cannot figure out how
Amazon split one transaction into two. You would have to manually check
those and not expect a match. My experience with matching in the OFX type
has never been perfect and I plan on taking extra time to manually match or
even just delete duplicates later for some transactions. Results with some
banks or credit cards are worse than others.
