Wel I dount anyone will be surprised that I broke my promise and failed to doa spoof within 7 days, Im only about a 5th of the way there, it will be more like 7 weeks at this rate lol. Anyways, watched episode 2 of zaproot, preferred the topics bein discussed this week, but the editing style totally ate my brain, maybe I am getting old, maybe there is something about cuttin ever or 2 seconds that destroys my brains ability to actually listen properly to whats being said, I dnno. But it sure makes it hard to parody will be hard pressed to cut any faster than the real show already does! Still it has got me analysing what I watch on TV (infrequently) a bit more - count the seconds before the shot change, its often only 2 secs, but the headmangle effect isnt quite the same, maybe its got something to do witht he audio which is more seamless on these tv programs, different pace of narration and background music perhaps? I like suf that lets it linger. I get no space to reflect with zaproot, which makes it very disposable, but I stop criticising now, I done. That's it! That's my new goal... is to make an episode so filled with brilliance it will make Irina's head explode! I'm comin' for you Irina! The Idea of greenwashing is something that should always be considered when dealing with material that purports to be `good for you'. Just watched it; waiting for the high production values, thinking that meant some sort of lavish Bugsby Berkeley number or something, but in the end found that I was watching something that was created by competent graphic designers, editors, and videographers. The stuff in the video wasn't neccessarily expensive, it was just made by competent professionals. I mean, it was all After Effects and Greenscreen-- things anyone can do. They are just well skilled at it. Steve, would you have enjoyed the content more if the host held the camera pointed to her own face? Would that legitimize the experience? It doesnt matter what I prefer. And rather ironically a main reason I havent done my own show is that I havent yet been able to live up to my own standards for professional graphics, etc. So thats not what I was ranting about. I suppose it is a combination of 'no attention-span required' style and some of the stuff they were covering, that got me ugly. I do not wish such shows dissapear, or to imply that they somehow harm vlogging, they arent my sort o thing, so what. They shoukd exist and I should feel free to have an opinion about them, nothing dramatic, no crusade. But a battle against greenwashing and the dumbing down or sexing up of sustainability issues, is something I may very well go on, at some point. The vido Ive promised will not even just be mangling that show in particular, I'll probably chuck in everything Ive ever seen from any green video on the net thats ound me up. It will just be the expression of an opinion through creativity instead of bitter words here, it wont aim to achieve much other than to scratch an itch. For although I spout my opinion o much, I do not place an special value in them, I do not think humanity would be better if only it would listen to me, or that the things that excite or horrify me must be the central issues for mankind to think about, though it may sound like I do sometimes I suppose. Also the no attention-span required style is what is required for anything that's trying to be commercial. There's infinite choice immediately available competing for people's attention. Also the no attention-span required style is what is required for anything that's trying to be commercial. Ugh, I hope that isn't true. Most stuff I watch, commercial or otherwise, requires some attention and critical thinking. There's infinite choice immediately available competing for people's attention. If you're not constantly engaging, constantly challenging your audience to pay attention and going so fast they need to rewatch, you're going to lose them. That's definitely true about the infinite choice, but I'm not sure the A.D.D.-ing of the world is such a great goal. I understand it's trendy to use jump cuts and MTV-style hyperactive edits, but it's not a necessity. I also understand that so far, in the extremely brief time that web video shows have been able to be called successful, many of them use this particular style. But that is definitely not a reason to say it's necessary, or that you'll lose your audience otherwise. Well I have been painfully slowly stumbling towards that goal for 2 or 3 years now, and unfortunately neither positive or negative attempts to get me to vlog, to put my money where my mouth is, lead to the desired results. If I could make what I think a good video should be, I would already be doing it. So I will take the easy way out and do what I already said I would do, a video that pokes fun at stuff I dont like. Maybe it will turn out useful, maybe it will suck and make a fools vision out of my stance, who knows. It certainly wont be a regular occurence unless I can finally overcome the dysfunctional wastes of time in my life. Anyway, if you are all for critique and criticism then the video I do may satisfy. But I fail to totally grasp the idea that 'Ive been served'. Congrats, and good luck with it. :) Here's the reply I posted to the NewTeeVee article: = I didn't mind the production values, though I do see your point that some people will see ZapRoot as being too highly produced not to be the `front' for some sort of entrepreneurial interest. I'll be interested to see how the viewers react to jump-cutting a small character over a moving greenscreen background. I've done my own jump-cut videos against a static background or even a static background with changing depths. I've seen Damien Somerset's work on Ask A Ninja, which is jump-cutting over one solid color and in a confined space. Of course, Ze Frank utilized jump-cuts again, in a confined space with a certain size/space/distance relationship between the character and the camera. What I haven't seen and maybe this is the next big thing is jump-cutting over a moving background where the character's so far away from the camera that they completely physically disappear from one location and arrive somewhere else on the screen several times within the same sentence. Having said that, I think the writing's fascinating and they have the niche subject matter to create a very popular show. They definitely have the elements of that formula that's worked so well for other video blog shows. ZapRoot seems ambitious and edgy Definitely one to keep an eye on in the coming months. = I think the show is very well done and is going to turn a lot of heads with the style and the edginess. Personally, I found it hard to watch with the on-air-talent hyperspacing all over the place, but that's partially because I tend to watch videos full-screen. Even if they're small, I zoom them with my macbook pro zoom feature. In trying to focus on the talent, I found myself looking at empty green space very often, and then during the time I spent re-locating the character, I wasn't listening to the dialogue so I was missing the point of the sentences. Then again, I was looking at the video for checking out the style of it, not to listen to the message of it. It's possible that your actual viewers, who are specifically interested in whatever you're talking about, will be more in-tune with the audio than the video and you'll be very successful in getting your point across. However, like I said in the post... Maybe hyperspacing the talent is the next big thing, and you're about to set a trend. :) Either way, you definitely have the proper elements in place to have a highly-viewed and popular show, like http://webbalert.com or http://wallstrip.com or http://textra.podshow.com/ or http://9.yahoo.com/. -- billcammack http://BillCammack.com The show is produced by me (Damien Somerset) Sarah Szalavitz. Im with newteevee on this one, sure does look like its going to be the worst greenwashing bullshit marketing in the style of a magazine format tv show, that Ive yet had the misfortune to cast my eyes upon. Yeah yeah, lets shop ourselves out of the unsustainable nightmare and feel real cool about ourselves at the same time, bah to all those doom and gloomers, its not worth doing unless its fun, never mind if it doesnt solve any of the real problems. People dont want to face those problems anyway, what they need is more distractions, and as a bonus we can all make a buck whilst feeling good about achieving nothing. Fear not, all the stuff that isnt really sustainable will start to dissapear up its own backside as soon as the realities of our poor energy future start to bite. Then we'll go hunting for a sort of fun thats more real. Its fun to be alive. Whistle whilst you work, the fun of people coming together to collectively overcome massive challenges, the fun of staying warm and fed for another day. I promise to do a twisted version of this show within 7 days, I have the same hair colour as the host, but my bluescreenings going to be pretty shoddy. If you feel that a show should be doing something better or different, you should go out and produce that show. Shut up and produce good shows and then get better. [videoblogging] Re: Intro New Green Show from the Ask A Ninja Editor
Yeah my rant wasnt ver nice, sorry about that. The production values seem high, it was the nature of some of the content style that got me all wound up. But yeah, I am a big fan of how much different video can coexist on the net, none of my criticisms were anything to do with this show threatening anybody else. I freely admit to being a mostly useless git who fails consistently to produce any shows, so I certainly only have myself to blame for nobody watching - theres nothing to watch! Shutting up is probably the best advice Ive had for a while, I'll go do that for a while. How do you really feel Steve? The first episode is one of the most polished things I've seen as a pilot in a while.
