PS what you say about anyone being able to play good tunes badly - anyone can play records yes and I think this is a good thing - this is what I like about the scene- it's like punk - anyone can and does do it - that's why the scene (in the UK anyhow) is so thriving cos people are just doing it whether or not they have the skills of someone like DJ Bone or Mills - many of these "amateur" clubnights are a lot more fun than having to hear someone like Claude Young p***ing everyone off with his showboating. What we need sometimes is more matter with less art! - ooops apologies for the pretentious quote.

It depends what you're saying about "bad" mixing - if you mean trainwrecks it can be annoying but I can forgive the odd one and I'm not overly bothered by "uninspired" mixing as long as the tunes are good. For instance Mills' R1 set the other day seemed fine to me - I can't say I noticed anything too embarrassing but then I'm not a DJ. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, March 06, 2003 5:36 PM To: Robert Taylor Cc: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]'; Robert Taylor; 'Phonopsia'; Anya Stang; 313 Subject: RE: (313) last night in london: osunlade. I know exactly what you mean about Sims. I've heard him twice now (@ both Retroverts) & haven't been overly impressed at all. He seems to have a 'shuffly' sound (i guess that's what you mean by 'bmtisch bmtisch') which doesn't do it for me. I thought Ruskin played the best records & Deetron was good too. I wont be going back to The Rocket though .. I thought it was much better at The Rhythm Factory. G. P.s bad mixing annoys me - anyone can play good records badly. It's just my opinion though ... I can't say I noticed the bad mixes cos I was too busy getting down and screamimng "Aciiieed!". Mind you, I've never been someone who cares that much about it or even notices it unless it is spectacularly good or spectacularly bad - it's the tunes that matter for me - eg Ben Sims is a great mixer but the last two times I've heard him he bored the sh** out of me with his tune selection, so I was chuffed when I heard Gerald playing some acid house - the young loopy crowd needed a bit of education and he seemed to go down pretty well - I for one (and the crowd I was with) was ecstatic to hear the likes of Phuture being played out on big loud rig - many tunes I had never heard in a club before, just in bedrooms - so it was a breath of fresh air after Sims' dull bmtisch bmtisch sound. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, March 06, 2003 5:06 PM To: Robert Taylor Cc: 'Phonopsia'; Anya Stang; 313 Subject: RE: (313) last night in london: osunlade. Nobody mentioned A Guy Called Gerald who seems to have had a bit of a DJing renaissance recently. He played a welcome set of old school Chicago acid at Retrovert the week before and this week he played some fantastic Faze-Action-style downtempo house with some Latin flavours but I have to say I didn't hear much of it cos I was dancing to Orson Lardy so much. He was the worst DJ at Retrovert for me. There were some bad mixes and the selection just didn't seemed a bit lame to me - it might of had something to do with scheduling him to play after Sims & before Ruskin but I definately felt he should have been kept in the back room. Then again I am a bangbang Mills fan ;o) G.
