Yeah, I think we need to remember, that we here on 313 and similar communities are in a bit of a bubble which is finite. In the UK, I would say more people appreciated John Peel for his broadcasting in *later* life, especially the 'Home Truths' programme, and others, not for his broadcasting about music. He *was* famous in the UK, but most people even whilst liking him, thought he was more or less an eccentric or an over-grown teenager (still stuck on 'teenage kicks') even if they regarded him with affection.
I suspect that the only reason we've got so much acreage of coverage in the uk press and media is because by and large, these organizations are staffed by people like you and me, they might not like the same music, but they're certainly not your average middle-Englader (or middle-American.) Journos and media people in general I would expect to be people who would have genuine respect and affection for John Peel. k -----Original Message----- From: Robert Taylor [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 27 October 2004 14:27 To: Odeluga, Ken; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: Re: (313) John Peel He shouldn't get one - that's perhaps a bit over the top despite the public's great love for the man. A huge public memorial service would be a good idea but it's ludicrous to expect a sombre parade of soldiers and horses marching down the Mall. Peel would have been aghast at such a thing -----Original Message----- From: Odeluga, Ken [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, October 27, 2004 12:23 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: Re: (313) John Peel Just a note to all asking if John Peel might get a state funeral. In the UK, *usually* the only people who are accorded that 'privilege' are sovereigns and prime ministers, and other senior ministers. Members of the opposition don't automatically get a state funeral. E.g., former labour party leader John Smith didn't get one, nor will another former Labour party leader, who was never Prime Minister, Michael Foot get one either. In the US IIRC, again *usually* you need to be a President or again a senior government official to get a state funeral. k ######################################################################## ############# Note: Any views or opinions are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent those of Channel Four Television Corporation unless specifically stated.
