Just a note to all asking if John Peel might get a state funeral. In the UK, *usually* the only people who are accorded that 'privilege' are sovereigns and prime ministers, and other senior ministers. Members of the opposition don't automatically get a state funeral. E.g., former labour party leader John Smith didn't get one, nor will another former Labour party leader, who was never Prime Minister, Michael Foot get one either.
In the US IIRC, again *usually* you need to be a President or again a senior government official to get a state funeral. k
