I use three different editors for handling ABC on the Mac (BarFly,
BBEdit and Nisus Writer). With all of them it's much quicker to
search a few large files than a zillion small ones; Nisus Writer
makes it painfully difficult to search large numbers of files,
though the kinds of pattern matching and replacement it can do are
way more sophisticated than any other editor I know of. Surely
the same is true on any OS? - there's a much larger hit opening a
small file than reading a comparable-sized chunk of a large one
that's already open.

I think ABCMus uses a similar user interface to BarFly (selecting
tunes from an index on a file, which can be large) so this doesn't
seem to be a problem on Windows either.
