I have the same behaviour on a Toshiba Equium L40-17M (PSL49E).

It has been a problem using ubuntu and Mandriva kernels since 2.6.32

As observed, under no particular load, the system fan goes to maximum and a
bogus temperature of 127C is reported, followed by a shutdown.
