Hi Damian,

I'll do this one in the reverse order.

I was aiming more for "relax" than "harden up". Sorry for making
light of your past troubles.

I am against recommending that CNZ incorporate a medialab into their
strategic plan because I believe it is a very bad way to spend the
money. This is a competition. Whatever they spend on it is money
that would otherwise go to artists or the Audio Foundation or
galleries, which I would prefer in most cases.

Righto. People have mentioned the ocean, the lack of super-rich
philanthropist/euro funding, the scattered artistic population, the
diversity of practise and interest, the lack of demand, the successful
grassroots organising, the unusual digital artists' network. Stuff
like that. But even if it would work, I still don't want it. It is
like you're trying to sell me a fake rolex: I wouldn't give you 10 yuan
even for a real one. Not out of antipathy, just disinterest.

It also seems to me that your premise ("works very well in more or less
every country") is wrong. Julian said there are bad labs, and from
here you have to look a very long way to find one at all. Maybe
there's one in Australia, probably in Singapore. That's a skipping a
lot of countries. But even if they all had one, I still wouldn't
think it was a good idea. That kind of argument is used to sell
sports stadiums.
