Well, understand that the Intel chip doesn't automatically execute
instructions in 32 vs. 64-bit mode - the instruction operands and other
parameters are different (for instance, if the instruction is to shift left
1 bit, is it supposed to shift 32-bits left by 1 bit, or 64-bits left by 1
bit?). To handle this, Intel included an instruction to switch the chip
between modes and the instructions run according to the current mode. It is
the OS kernel and only the kernel that can switch modes. When the OS starts
an application it switches to the required mode at the moment of giving the
app control, and when an interrupt occurs the OS kernel captures it and
switches back, since the OS kernel always runs in 64-bit mode. Note drivers
run as an extension of the OS, therefore, all drivers without exception must
also run in 64-bit mode.

Plugins run as an extension of the application and that is why I am pretty
sure that a 64-bit application can run only 64-bit plugins. (The instruction
that switches the Intel chip is considered a "privileged" instruction and
only the kernel can execute it).

So yes, I'm pretty sure your Red Giant etc. plugins must be able to run in
the same mode as the application that runs it, or else the Intel
instructions become incoherent and the system crashes.

Hoping this helps.

Lee,
yes they are 3rd-party: Red Giant,Magic Bullet. I had not thought of a
possible problem with the 32 vs 64-bit issue- didn't even enter my mind that
plug-ins would be version-dependent. Do you know if that is indeed true?

I was attempting to export the CS4 project thru Encore when the
hang/freeze-up kept happening. I tried that because if you recall, i
couldn't get the project to load right in CS5 because of the missing
plug-ins.

So- to sum up: there are 3 relatively small finished CS4 projects that we
cannot seem to get out of the computer. I'd like to try to save as a data
disk-that's why i tried to export as AVI. Thought it'd be straightforward
(opposed to encoding as Mpeg)but of course it isn't! I recently tried to
export as mpeg & it came out 1 time with no audio, the 2nd try had sound but
just stuttered when played in a dvd player.i then gave up on encoding & just
wanted a straight avi file of the timeline w/effects- foiled again!

Does anyone know how I can save these projects? not even necessarily for
future re-editing). I had looked into a possible option a short time back-
something like "collect & save all assets" -can't recall the correct name.
It also froze, and when i mentioned it on this group no one seemed to have
anything to say on that. hmmm...
the plan now is to (once we can save those 3 projects) wipe all traces of
CS4,delete all files related to the CS4 projects (format the drives maybe?),
and start fresh with CS5. Somehow I think it won't be as easy & painless as
that.

ugghhhh.... Adriane
