32bit plugins for 32bit CS%, 64bit for 64bit.
Same story for operating systems and hardware drivers. Until Vista and
especially with Windows 7, hardware manufacturers were really dragging their
feet about writing 64bit drivers for 64bit versions of Windows.
Finding drivers for 64bit Windows XP is often futile because the device makers
just flat out wouldn't write the drivers.
The 64bit PC hardware you'll encounter, unless you maintain expensive servers,
is x64 or as AMD calls it x86-64. Intel created IA64 aka Itanium, without any
native support for 32bit or lower code. It requires a 64bit OS and runs 32bit
code via emulation. AMD countered with x86-64 which can run both 32 and 64 bit
code, operating systems and programs, at full speed without emulation. Intel
abandoned their dream of IA64 doing away with anything less than 64bit and
followed AMD's lead on extending x86 to 64 bits. What helped that along was
Microsoft wasn't interested in writing an IA64 version of a desktop version of
Windows. Server 2003 and 2008 were available for IA64 but it's looking like the
next Windows Server version won't be.
For IA64 servers there's
# HP-UX 11i
# OpenVMS I64
# NonStop OS
# multiple GNU/Linux distributions (including Debian, Ubuntu, Gentoo, Red Hat
and Novell SuSE)
# FreeBSD/ia64[57]
so even if Microsoft doesn't come out with Server 20xx for it there's plenty of
other choices.
Fortunately DEC Alpha isn't still around to further muddy the bit-water.
Windows NT was made for Alpha and Microsoft got as far as Release Candidates of
2000 for Alpha before deciding to abandon that 64bit platform.
