More fun with 64 bits...
VMLite is a free alternative to Windows XP Mode for Windows 7. VMLite runs on
almost all versions of XP, Vista and 7, IIRC it won't run on Starter versions.
VMLite doesn't require your CPU to have hardware virtualization support. XP
Mode initially required it but Microsoft has released a patch for that.
VMLite has better virtual hardware support than XP Mode. Like XP Mode it can
run applications on another version of Windows seamlessly with the host OS.
VMLite can run any 32bit Windows version on any other 32 or 64 bit version of
Windows that VMLite supports, with or without hardware virtualization in the
CPU.
Here's where VMLite really has it over XP Mode. If the CPU has hardware
virtualization it can do fun things like running 64 bit Windows 7 on a 32 bit
XP host.
Thus if you really don't like Vista or 7 but want to run a 64 bit app that
requires one of those and have a new enough PC that runs 32bit XP amazingly
fast (which of course is why you'd have such a box) you can install Vista or 7
so it runs in the background and you only have to deal with it through the
apps. Also works well to cause WTF? when people see a Vista or 7 only app
running on XP. :)
It's like Parallels on OS X but it's running Windows on Windows instead of
Windows on OS X, and unlike Parallels it's FREE.
