Sorry for not talking about this much, but during our investigation, we wanted to make sure we were covering all the bases. It does appear to be an isolated manufacturing defect. We are working to narrow down and publish the MAC address list of potentially affected units, and should have this within a few days.
Unfortunately, this could be a latent issue, and units may not fail right away. More details to follow. Supply chain of a critical component issue. The guy managing the logistics of that got fired as I recall. I don’t remember what critical part was left unordered and there was a huge lead time on it. Assuming that this is a manufacturing and not a design issue, my guess is that it's either some process causing a component crack (i.e. not properly baking a moisture sensitive part before assembly..causing popcorning, or a mechanical flex during separation), or possibly a counterfeit component.
