I'm pretty sure we're going to the 7nm node from where we are now. (we're at around 22-26 nm as intel puts AMD in a choke-hold... we could stay at that node for decades if AMD goes under though. =(

The real issue is that we are only working in two dimensions right now. The next major improvement will come from "through silicon vias"

There are severe thermal issues though. =(

Even that would be many orders of magnitude (4 or 5) worse than a true 3D chip. =\

So yeah, there is some room for hardware improvement, especially with paradigm changes such as memristors and graphene...

What we really need to do is get serious about the software. =|
