This change has occured in the 2.4 release in Ubuntu and generated:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/208786

I don't think that just copying what other software does is a relevent reason
other software can be wrong. But I can see peoples point about view information
etc.
Instead of greying out why not just change the colour of the icon?
When the document has not been saved the normal blue icon with a tooltip of
'Save Ctrl+S' (I like keyboard shortcuts in tooltips)
When there have been no modifications a green (or some other colour) icon with a
tooltip of 'Document has not been modified since last save Ctrl+S'

This way we have the benefit of showing the user whether the document has been
saved really obviously (saving takes a long time for large documents, I don't
want to have to do it more often than necessary) and at the same time people
won't get confused and think something is broken.

This way I hope everybody would be happy. :-)

Thank You
