I was also like mba and pmike and used the Save icon to check for the modified status, because it was convenient and visible. And, while it took me some time to get used to looking at the indicator in the status bar instead of the Save icon, once I got used to it, it felt just fine. And I like the fact that I can always save the document. So, for me, overall it's a win. But I also feel we can do better by making the modified status indicator more visible, instead of just setting '*' when the document is modified. Maybe putting some sort of small icon when the document is modified might increase its visibility.
