Jim - The HT-40 came out before zeners and leds unless I'm really out in left field.
Bill Breshears', WC3K, modification used those components to give an over modulation "indicator" to adjust the mic gain with, and allow the operator to run with a clean signal. Circa 1999 - 2002.
