You'd think they could think of another way to keep developer accounts "authentic" besides charging money. That's the "Something Awful forums" method, and it's a poor way to do it. For example, how about dedicating some automated tools, and some part-time human resources, to monitoring app distribution activity and ban "inauthentic" accounts? I don't even know what constitutes an "inauthentic" account anyway.
I'm so happy with so many things about the Android environment, I really wish this fee wasn't here, especially for people who want to just *give away* apps for *free*. I don't want to charge people anything, so I shouldn't have to pay anything. The mobile Internet shouldn't differ so sharply from the "real" Internet.
