Sony Vaio:
My case was different: the x-server doesnt start anymore after the update.
I needed to coment out some settings in the xorg.conf Device Section (ChipSet, 
ChipId, ChipRev, BusID) - after that the xserver runs as before,
but i didnt check or test the performance.

TP43p:
No luck at all, only a downgrade saved me.

NB: the "giving up" empty phrase was born out of my
frustration -  its now gone :-)
