East Orange mayor to Ala. peers: Fight gangs

MOBILE, Ala.: Alabama black mayors should develop ways to fight
gangs in their cities, East Orange, N.J., Mayor Robert Bowser said.
Bowser, the president of the National Conference of Black Mayors,
urged the 10 mayors attending a meeting of the Alabama chapter
Saturday to develop programs to steer children away from gangs.
"Anything that you're planning, make sure it lasts for a long time,
because this is an ongoing problem," Bowser said.
Alabama has 53 black mayors, said James Perkins, president of the
Alabama
chapter.
