I am NOT saying there is crime there now, that is the "perception" outsiders
have. Although my car was broken into on Bond 4wks ago....

2yrs ago when I was thinking of opening an office in AP I had pulled police
reports for crimes on this particular section of Cookman. Countless car
break-ins and several mugging attempts, but that was 2yrs ago. I'm sure its
much better now

I have co-workers who live in RedBank and Absolutely love eating in AP, but
they won't go to Cookman at night, they have this perception that when the sun
goes down, the criminals come out to "play"

The APP doesn't help with that perception, unless you live in AP and know
firsthand its not as bad as its made out to be

I used the meters today, I enjoyed finding parking, and didn't mind paying the
$4

Apparently some of you weren't around before 1984-1994, when a few
stores were still open on Cookman like Jay Davids, the Youth Center, Wolco's,
The Press Box, Rexall Drugs and Lynn's was still open.
There were meters then and really can't remember when they pulled them up.
There were parking meters on Sewall Ave., Bond St, Monroe
Ave. and Emory Sts. The Palace was still open and you had to park
around the perimeter of the building. There were parking meters everywhere.
The conventional kind. The Asbury Park Police
would chalk the back of your tire and ticket you, unless you fed the
meter. City Hall was on Bangs Ave. and you had to walk up a flight
of stairs to pay your fine. $2.00!

The whole downtown was still open in 1970 with Steinbach's as the anchor store,
The Press was next to 1st Merchant's Bank on Mattison
Ave. I ate at the Press Box everyday, when I was pregnant, just
for the kosher dill pickle. I would get the #18 or #20 bus from
So. Belmar into Asbury Park, after dropping my 5 year old to
Afternoon Kindergarten, spend just enough time in AP to pick my
daughter up from school and walk the few blocks home from Belmar
Elementary School. On Wednesdays, Asbury Park Stores were open
late. Imagine a soft snow falling while you're Christmas
Shopping. I never forgot that and the "Village" feel to what I
thought was New England! C'mon, I was new here. Just some fond
memories I have about this area and what it meant to the natives
and my children, who saw the changes evolve here.

Pay the fee, have a cup of coffee, enjoy the scene. Wish I could
still ride a bike, fearless. I love reading how many of you ride yours. Life
is short. I still don't think residents should pay
to park in front of their own homes and don't understand a council
that won't paint "residents only with decal" that glues inside
the windshield, for the outrageous taxes they pay. I live 2 blocks
from Cookman. Being the "commuter" Mom I was, I'd drive! Like Mrs.
Magoo!

Show me where the crime is downtown, please! I mean Cookman,
Mattison and the Wesley Lake area.
