I have to put a plug in for Suse, since that seems to be pretty popular
on the other side of the pond.

I know this is an older thread now (August 5th), but just wanted to
mention that the issue with CentOS having the open letter has been
resolved. CentOS isn't going anywhere, and the issues they were having
appears to have gotten sorted out.
Recently, I've been using Ubuntu desktop on my laptop (9.04), and have
also been using Ubuntu server on a few virtual machines, mostly to get
myself familiar with it since everyone seems to be using it. I've been
a long time supporter of CentOS, and have pretty much used it
exclusively.
I must say, I have been pretty impressed with Ubuntu. Mainly the
package selection is the major difference. It sure seems to be a lot
easier to get the package you need when you're trying to test out some
new feature with Asterisk. With CentOS, the problem has been that
you've needed to install a couple of external repositories (DAG,
EPEL), and also the CentOS Plus repo.
That seems a big kludgey to me, however I've been doing it for a
little while now, and have a pretty good success rate with getting the
same features and packages installed on both system.
As someone else has mentioned, the hardware support may or may not be
better with CentOS (probably moreso on the server grade hardware side
of things, such as in RAID controllers, and the like). I've personally
not had any hardware driver issues, but I don't tend to use anything
too elaborate.
So it really just boils down to what you're more comfortable with.
I've become a bit enamored by Ubuntu server lately, and haven't found
it does things all that much different from CentOS (which has been the
main sticking point for me -- I don't have the time to learn 7 ways of
doing the same thing).
Outside of Ubuntu or CentOS, I have zero interest in any other Linux
distributions.

With the recent problem that the CentOS has regarding funding and other

I mainly debate between CentOS and Ubuntu (both server flavor). Any
insights, stories?
