Update:
I traded cards with slots, did not seem to make much difference. I got
to using the scroll lock key to stop the boot info. I noticed that there
REALLY is a driver being loaded for both of the cards. (When I have only
one plugged in at a time.) Seems to be the same driver. Refers to
vortex.html, it specifically mentions the 3C595 card but does not
mention the newer "office" card. Both seem to behave simliarly when
installed and booted with astlinux's CD.

When I run ifconfig I get all the regular lines EXCEPT for the missing
one below:
inet addr:192.168.2.6 Bcast:255.255.255.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

Looks like I am not getting any IP assignment. I was using one of the
cards with XP and it worked OK and even got onto the internet. So the
cards, cable, hubs, switches etc. are all functional.

I found a HOWTO troubleshoot networking issues. Some things mentioned
were netstat, ifconfig, curl, mii-tool, ethtool, and others. mii-tool,
and ethtool weren't findable from /tmp/root, the default dir I am logged
into upon bootup.

I CAN ping 127.0.0.1 but no others were found to be pingable yet.
