There seems to be a lot of debate on the subject.  Check out this thread:

        However, my practical experience has been that DMA support with any 
flash media is iffy at best.  There are not many places in AstLinux 
where you can actually benefit from the increase in transfer speed. 
However, the reduction in CPU usage would be beneficial (obviously). 
The default in AstLinux (dma disabled by default) is a trade-off between 
speed and reliability.
