I'm currently using a Frenrir (transformation of Houndorf). It's stats aren't the most amazing (particularely the defense, though it's magic defense is much better). You catch it at around level 40. While difficult to train at first it learns an ice type move at I think level 49 which is pretty destructive. It's pretty fast as well which helps a good bit. You can give it the ice dagger for a bit more punch as well.
