@Shinobi, not to take away from Terry Goodkind's books, but these days I actually think I am coming to prefer shorter series, trilogies, quadrologies etc especially in fantasy, since I tend to find things get a bit strung out in later books, and even if the series comes to a good conclusion, there is still usually something of a mid series slump where the plot stalls or things get a bit over stated.
it happens in wheel of time from lord of Chaos to knife of dreams, where there were just too many plots with inconsequential characters and not enough mobility in the main plot, and it happens in sword of truth, though in sword of truth's case, I didn't feel so much that the plot was standing still, rather that Goodkind was trying to repeat or reemphasise plot points from earlier books, as well as making his political and moral theories a lot more blatant, and more obviously fashioning his world and characters to fit those theories.
Interestingly enough, I didn't really mind the repeating plot that in several earlier books where one book ends by employing a solution which buggers up the world for the next book, EG wizard's first rule, into stone of tears, or blood of the fold into temple of the winds, into soul of the fire, since each book did something rather new with the world, it wasn't really until naked empire that things started to feel a bit more over stated for me, though I fully agree that the chainfire trilogy was an awesome story told in three volumes, especially the way it bought together the history of the war wizards, dream walker, slif etc.
