@Garret, I suspect the rank system will be one of these things that is more complicated to explain than to actually use in the game.
Just think of it this way, big buff types like fighters need to go at the front, and less well armored types like mages need to go second or third, and you should be able to pick things up as you go on, or at least I suspect it will work that way.
Actually one thing I like about the system is that it is so easy to understand and keep in mind, it's not say like an entire chess board the characters are positioned on or having to remember a really complex formation structure with different parts having different strengths and weaknesses, or a really complex war gaming weapon range system or whatever.
