'nc' means 'no connection' - the pin isn't used for anything. '-ve' means 'negative', and it's this pin that the outer part of the RCA jacks on your Squeezebox should be connected to. The other two pins are for the signal, and should be joined to the centre pins of the two RCA jacks.
If you have a multimeter, or feel like taking the plugs apart, you should be able to check fairly easily that this is how the cable is wired.
