I think servies has a point, actually. What's really amazing about human hearing is our ability to process the data and extract useful information from it, not the ears themselves.
One interesting thing is to estimate (using Shannon) the maximum information capacity of a human ear/brain conduit. You just need to know the bandwidth of nerve impulses and the number of nerves.
