We have a very difficult room, I think. A mostly open plan living room,
dining room and kitchen. Think of a square room with a half wall about
2/3 into the width of the room dividing off the kitchen from the living
room with the dining area common to both the kitchen and living room
(the leg of the "L" if you ignored the kitchen). The speakers are in
the living room area which is where we do most of our listening and
face the long way into the room as opposed to facing towards the
kitchen/dining room portion. There are lots of constraints due to big
picture windows (speakers are about 1 1/2 higher than the window base),
furniture placement, etc. The RH speaker is about 3' in from a solid
wall running most of the length of the room and 2' forward from the
rear wall. The LH speaker is also 2' forward from the rear wall, but
has a good 12' (that's the dining area) between it and the outer wall.
I can't really move them forward any more. Speakers are seperated by
about 9' and that's about as close as they're gonna' be able to get +/-
an inch or two.

Unfortunately, we don't have a listening "spot"--again due to design
issues, so I am striving for that "whole room" sound rather than having
it necessarily focused in on a spot. Right now, I have them both toed
in (and tilted up a bit) with the RH speaker toed in more than the
LH---my seat-of-the-pants reasoning on that being that the big long
wall near the RH is reflecting more sound into the room and toeing the
speaker away from that wall will compensate a bit for the LH speaker
being so far from any parallel wall at all. They're still breaking in
of, course, but if you or anyone has any advice as to how I might best
place the speakers and compensate for the room oddities, I would be
very appreciative. Right now things are sounding pretty good, though
but, of course, if I can tweak a better sound by following some sage
advice, I'm all ears!
