You make a lot of sense Phil. My source material is all 44.1/16 bit red
book audio (or LPs recorded in that format) so there must be a limit to
what a DAC can do with that data other than "present" it slightly
differently.

I always chuckle at the first line of your sig. As somebody who has
done a bit of (very) amateur recording of (slightly less) amateur
musicians I know exactly where you are coming from.
