That premise gets invalidated when we conduct an abx test where both a and b are identical, and yet we get the results that indicate statistically significant deviation. In other words, you repeatedly play the same track through the same amplifier, while pretending that some sort of a change is occurring, and your test subjects report that they are hearing significant differences between different playbacks.
