Well maybe. You do need to have that data in/data out stuff on pins 2
and 3 correct or even that won't work. Neither will it work if some
other configuration stuff (baud rate and flow control in particular)
isn't set up correctly which I suspect is why some people's USB to
serial stuff gives so much trouble. Maybe the problem is with the
serial setup not the USB to serial device.
You can also tune the USB to serial connection if you select
"properties" for the serial port and a couple fo layers down in one
of the tabs you'll find some faster/slower settings or max size of data blocks.
I wouldn't be too sure about "real" serial ports either. Particularly
the ones on motherboards of desktops. I had to buy a PCI card serial
adapter to get the workshop machine to have a real serial port that works.

You can buy PC Card serial ports for laptops that sole the problem -
permanently. They are a tad more expensive that the USB/Serial
connectors - but I had spent more on them for zero results than the
PC Card cost by the time I bought the PC Card!
