Is there a way to permanently store frequently-used

Sure, just use the "Patterns" pop-up.
My problem with that technique is that is doesn't lend itself to
documentation of what has been done to a text file in the text file
itself.
I receive a file and play with it in the search/replace window
until I see what works. I then want to send the original copy, some
text showing what I did, and the modified version.
The modal nature of the search/replace window makes it easier to
write a full fledged perl script.
In short, I want to paste my patterns and other stuff related to
find/replace in a worksheet and it remains a PITA. What I'd really
like is a way to execute search/replace commands from a worksheet
in a way that they would refer to a targeted open window.
Not from a worksheet, but have you considered a Text Factory?
You can then name them, etc, and it'll be semi-documented,
and you can run multiple in a row, etc.
