Its been awhile since I played, but I don't think the luck factor is huge. You roll the die every turn, as does everyone, and there are enough rolls, as in Settlers, not that they "average out," but that if you chose good rolling strategies you did better than those who were overly-cautious or overly-optimistic. Its perhaps like Ogre in that. You're making a series of bets,
A series of particularly "lucky" rolls that give the win to someone who was choosing his gear randomly is pretty unlikely, though he may do well for a chunk of the game.
