There are none altruistic motives for companies contributing to open source projects; even when not legally required. If a company adds a (for them) crucial feature, by submitting it back to trunk their feature gets maintained going into future versions of binc. If they don't contribute the patch back - they need to monkey patch their required feature into every revision. If things go awry with their monkey patched version, they're really out on their on as far as community support goes.
