Tom, Down here in backwards Oklahoma I recall that the Ice Man would come around every couple of days during the summer. You would leave his little plackard in your window if you wanted ice that day. This was around the mid Fifties in the smaller towns in Oklahoma. We did have an "ice house" in the small town where my Grandmother lived. They did make the ice there and they also provided freezer space for rent. This was a fairly common practice in many small towns. When folks would harvest their gardens they would put their veggies in freezer containers and then they would take them down to the ice house for storage. The "locker room" was huge and it also contained the ice which the plant manufactured. I do not recall a lot of these in the larger towns after about 1950 but they did continue in the more rural areas. Cy, the Ancient Okie...

It was cut from ponds and the like using huge 2 man saws and stored in "ice houses" which were at least partially under ground. They packed it in saw dust as an insulator. It could then be shipped fairly successfully in sailing ships, again packed in saw dust, to many parts of the world. Until probably before world war II in this country, delivering ice was a common occupation. Finished up only when refrigeration became commonplace. I bet most of that was winter cut and stored. Not that I remember those days, quite, <GRIN> tom Net-Tamer V 1.13 Beta - Registered To listen to the show archives go to link http://acbradio.org/handyman.html or ftp://ftp.acbradio.org/acbradio-archives/handyman/ The Pod Cast address for the Blind Handy Man Show is. http://www.acbradio.org/news/xml/podcast.php?pgm=saturday The Pod Cast address for the Cooking In The Dark Show is. http://www.gcast.com/u/cookingindark/main.xml Visit The New Blind Handy Man Files Page To Review Contributions From Various List Members At The Following Address: http://www.jaws-users.com/handyman/ Visit the new archives page at the following address http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ For a complete list of email commands pertaining to the Blind Handy Man list just send a blank message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Yahoo!
